Apple has been commissioning artists to design Apple Music playlist covers as a way to connect more directly with the communities that shape and inspire the music. These curated playlists, updated weekly, span a wide range of genres—including the distinctly local Russian Chanson.
Originally rooted in prison culture and dominated by acoustic guitar melodies, Russian Chanson has since evolved into a mix of romantic ballads, upbeat tunes, and love songs. I was invited to design a cover for this genre, capturing its unique blend of nostalgia and emotion.
Apple Music wanted this playlist artwork to be inspired by Soviet playing card designs, known for their distinctive typography and intricate ornamental details on the card boxes. I created a flourish pattern that covers half of the design and can be mirrored to seamlessly fit across all Apple media platforms.
