Modular type exploration

I often hear of novice graphic designers encountering issues coming up with typographic letterforms because there are just so many rules involved. Type veterans scare them even more by propagating the idea that letters should have a strict form and be legible at first sight 😱

Personally I think rules are f***ing annoying and often constrain creative exploration. Letters are born from play and experimentation, and during this process there are no rules. Just your pen, paper and spontaneity waiting to spill out. To prove it, let me show you how to design 6 modular letter shapes out of one and come up with some design layouts based on these shapes.
